Summary

An estimated 14 million End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) arise annually in Europe, (10-12 million in the

EU) and up to 40 million worldwide. The metallic components of these vehicles are already largely

recycled but up to 10 million tonnes per anum of non-metallic wastes remain unrecovered worldwide

and are generally landfilled (although a small proportion is incinerated). The EU ELV Directive is

targeting these wastes for reduction by 40 % (by mass) by 2006, and 80 % by 2015. This will

present significant challenges to the automotive and recycling industries.
