ENVIRON highlights the potentially huge cost implications arising from the next phase of the

Landfill Directive implementation. In the short term, this legislation will not lead to an end of all ‘dig

and dump’ activities. Indeed the off-site disposal of non-hazardous materials which are regarded as

not being acceptable to remain on site for reasons such as the potential risk to future site

occupants, or where there is a clear need for greater institutional assurance by removing

uncertainties, will continue.
