Soil investigations for urban planning, development and environmental remediation have become

standard practice in recent years for professional engineers, environmental scientists, and other

related professionals. The need for environmental site assessments and detailed site

characterization of contaminated sites and of other civil and environmental project sites has led to

the development of numerous types of site characterization methodologies. Soil investigations for

urban sites frequently involve complex characterization of atypical soil/geological/groundwater

conditions due to man-altered subsurface conditions.

The purpose of this chapter is to present the range of site characterization methodologies that are

being used in professional practice in the USA. There is no other combined reference source for all

of these methods. The scope of this chapter includes published manuals, standards, and methods

used in professional practice.
